Risk factors Patient-related risk factors

Patient-related risk factors include:

  • Age - Increased risk in younger (<20 years old) and older populations (>65 years old)1
  • Gender - Females at greater risk1
  • Poor nutrition, preexisting oral problems (including drug-related xerostomia and infections caused by disease or myelosuppressant treatments), excessive tobacco or alcohol consumption1
  • Type of tumor2
  • Genetic factors3,4
  • Poor oral care.5
